This large, quality silver-plated icon reproduction of Saint Francis is hand painted on a solid wood base, beautifully done with ornate 24-carat gold and silver accents. Saint Francis (1182-1226) is the founder of the Franciscan Order and one of the most famous and beloved saints of the Church. He renounced worldly wealth, preaching the importance of simplicity and poverty based on the ideals of the Gospel. He was known for his love of nature and animals, especially birds. The six scenes portrayed in this icon are as follows: Upper left: Birth and baptism of St. Francis Middle left: St. Francis listening to the holy calling of one of his pupils Lower left: St. Francis during mission time: Baptism Ceremony Upper right: Holy calling of Clara (future saint) who adopted the St. Francis rules for Women's order, later named in her name "Clarise" Middle right: St. Francis preaching for animals and talking with them Lower right: St. Francis lying in state before internment The entire icon is overlaid with a beautifully finished, highly detailed repousse (high relief) gold and silver-plated metallic cover (also known as a "riza") with attached gold-plated halo.
